If you want to properly visit Yorkshire and not only explore York, you have to visit Castle Howard. It is a perfect day trip from York and will give you some fresh air outside the city.
Castle Howard is one of the few privately owned castles in England. I never had heard of this place before but my girlfriend insisted to visit this place. Be prepared that it is quite a journey to get there from York, but it is absolutely worth it
The moment you enter the castle grounds you discover the beauty of this place. The grounds are fabulous and every person who loves a bit of nature has some good opportunity for some great walks here. Of course you can stick just to the castle grounds, however don’t feel shy to make some good walks in the area. For some good tips ask at the ticket desk.
When you enter the grounds, of course you can immediately storm into the castle and enjoy the beauty of it. However don’t forget to also look around the beautiful garden. There is rose garden, some ponds and a nice forest with some education for children. The garden is beautiful designed and always give you a good view on how remote this place is. When we were there it became even lovelier with the snow that decorated the area pretty nicely.
Unfortunately the palace was closed for us. It was closed because of some winter renovations. However based on some pictures from for example Hand Luggage Only it was a real pity we weren’t able to explore the rooms within the castle.
Don’t forget to finish your day at the Café. Food is decent and not too expensive for a tourist attraction. Besides that it is a good place to warm up or get dry if you are here on a typical England type of day.
