Since 1989 Hungary is again a democratic parliamentary republic. During WWI Hungary lost 71% of its territory, 58% of its population and 32% of ethnic Hungarians. Nowadays Hungary is a high-income economy with a very high standard of living. Since 2002 Hungary is part of the EU and since 2007 also part of the Schengen area. One of the nicknames of Hungary is Paris of the East.
