The UK is home to some incredible cities, so when you’re planning on places to go they can often seem like an obvious choice. London, Liverpool, Edinburgh and Cardiff to name a few are all vibrant, exciting and full of fun things to see and do. However the UK is far more than just its cities, and there are some truly incredible areas that are well worth a visit. Whether you’re from the UK or are visiting from abroad, here are just a few places to pop on your itinerary.
Parks
The National Trust have parks in England, Wales and Northern Ireland, they are a charity which works to protect and preserve places of historical interest. Many of them run things like galleries, exhibitions and events, so you have things to do as well as the sights to see. They’re full of history and wildlife, and are peaceful and relaxing places to spend a day or just an afternoon.
Beaches
When you think of the UK, it might not be its beaches that instantly spring to mind. After all, most people wanting a beach holiday also want lots of sun and tropical weather which of course the UK isn’t famous for. However there really are some wonderful beaches to visit, and actually if you go at the right time of year you can get some scorching hot weather. The british seaside is all about eating fish and chips or ice cream, playing games on the beach, building sandcastles and paddling in the sea. There are nice ones dotted all around the coast of the UK but down south they’re particularly good. Bournemouth and Brighton have fantastic beaches and tonnes of tourist attractions and fun things to do.
Countryside
The UK is known for its quintessential green landscapes, and if rolling hills and tranquility are your kind of thing then you won’t go far wrong here. Use your time to walk through meadows or woodland trails, go for an afternoon tea in a cafe or tea room, or visit a gastro pub for some hearty English country pub grub. Derbyshire is one such place in the UK with plenty of beautiful scenery and lots of things to do. You can explore abbeys and medieval halls and manor houses. There are museums, art galleries and much more. There are lots of Derby hotels in the area so you won’t struggle finding somewhere to stay. Places like Scotland and Northern Ireland also have incredible idyllic countryside and places of cultural and historical interest to explore.
Lochs, Lakes and Waterfalls and Rivers
There are some incredible bodies of water in the UK which make stunning sights. In Scotland, the Lake District and in Wales you can see some of these epic lakes and lochs. Here you have the opportunity to go swimming, boating, fishing, bird watching- you can even try out some water sports. Waterfalls include the Kidson Force in Yorkshire, or you could go on a river cruise on some of the UK’s most epic rivers starting from Places like the Cotswolds or the Thames in London.
