This article is quite related to the article: “How to find housing abroad”. However I must warn you in advance it isn’t easy to find a new job in a new country. This also depends on your experience and on your wishes of course. For me personally the job that I have now in London is also basically my “first real” job to start my career.
1. Know your skills
One of the differences with finding a job abroad is that your skills will be different than the skills that you have in your own country. For example your greatest selling point would be that you speak a different language and have experience with different markets as well. They hired me for my current position because I had a lot of experience in different countries, I was from mainland Europe, speak different languages and they were looking for someone to expand their business to Europe.
2. It is always easier to find a job when you are already in the country
Maybe you are wondering why I put this point here because the article is about how to find a job in a different country. The thing is sometimes you need to accept that you need to do a job first that is not related to your degree. I didn’t get into any graduate scheme in London but I really wanted to move to London. However living there without any income isn’t possible. So I found a job as a teacher assistant and decided to continue my search while I was in London. Within a month I found a job that is related to my educational background.
3. Connect with people
Sounds obvious, I always post this tip. But basically this is the general lesson in everything. If you want to discover the best salami places or want to find a job. Local people always know things better than you and they have connections you don’t have. You need to be lucky we are living in a digital age where it is easier than ever to connect with people by placing your messages in a Facebook group, Meetup place, Couchsurfing group and so on.
Good luck with your search for a job. And if you want a job in London you can always contact me, currently we are still recruiting at our office.
