It might sound unrealistic – but it isn’t…Many great ski resorts are easily accessible for a quick break – at a reasonable price. And they’re destinations with plenty of character too – which is so important for an authentic traveller.
We’re not just talking about slopes and apres ski here, either…
So where are we thinking of? Good question. Well, France is a great first choice – especially Meribel.
Why is Meribel a great destination?
First of all, it’s easily accessible. The nearest airports, at Grenoble and Chambery, are only an hour and a half away.
And it’s steeped in history and heritage – which makes it so much more interesting than some purpose built resorts. You’ll find everything from-old churches and ancient hamlets to cow barns and traditional chalets.
The valley itself has been shaped over the centuries by the farming families whose descendants still live here.. It was these same local residents who founded the resort back in the 30’s – alongside British skier Peter Lindsay. And Meribel is authentic because of their efforts to make sure their valley stayed true to its origins.
There’s a wide range of accommodation on offer – with everything from budget hotels to picturesque lodges available. The Chalet Lapin Blanc in Meribel offers real ‘ski in ski out’ luxury.
And there’s so much more here than just the slopes themselves…
Les Allues
Les Allues is the valley’s main village and it’s well worth a visit. You’ll find a baroque church and fascinating museum amongst its narrow streets. And when snow conditions are good, you can ski the long Red Run all the way down to the village. Then enjoy lunch in one of Les Allues’ local restaurants, before returning to Méribel by free bus or lift.
Take a guided tour
Back in Meribel centre itself, you could take a guided walk with a qualified English-speaking guide. You’ll learn about the pioneers who founded the resort – and how their building code resulted in such harmonious architecture.
Go wild on a snowshoe outing
Or equip yourself with a pair of snowshoes and get off the beaten track on a tour of Meribel’s wild areas. It’s a wonderful way to unlock more of this special valley’s secrets – and its history and heritage. From herders’ homes to intriguing animal tracks, there’s plenty to discover when you go a little off piste.
Eat in a traditional mountain restaurant
If you’re hungry, you can grab a bite at Les Crêtes – the restaurant that time forgot, high on the Tougnète ridge. And try authentic local dishes like crozets , tartiflette or raclette. That’s hearty and delicious local food at its very best.
And for a really magical experience you could even spend the night in the Refuge du Christ mountain refuge. Why not?
A few last words
We think Meribel has so much to offer – whether or not you’re an experienced skier – or even ski at all! And it’s a great short break getaway all year round. So if you’re itching for a few days away – and you’re an adventurous traveller – why not try it?
