The UK gets on average 23.7 days of snow fall a year. In York we were already lucky to have snowfall at Castle Howard. This week we even have snow in London coming from the Beast in the East, also known as storm Emma. The last time this happened was in December 2010.
I couldn’t let this opportunity go by just sitting the whole day in the office. So I went out during break time and cycled around central London to take some pictures. Besides that I had a beautiful cycle ride to the office as well where I could take some pictures.
Pictures from Central London
There is nothing more iconic maybe than London’s Underground system. Overcrowded during these types of weather but as recognisable as ever in the City.
Trafalgar Square, two weeks ago we celebrated Chinese New Year on this square. To celebrate the start of the year of the dog. Now only a couple of tourists are brave enough to visit the square and enter National Gallery.
The two sphinxes. A lot of people don’t know to locate this monument next to the Thames but I love them. Especially because of the combination of the statue with the London Eye in the background. There isn’t much visible of the Eye in the background, but you are still able to see it.
It is a pity that especially now the Big Ben has to be reconstructed. While Westminster is visible in the background, the tower is hidden by construction work. However that doesn’t change the fact that I love this picture. The combination of London’s red phone booths and the snow is absolutely marvelous.
Pictures from my commute:
My morning shot, the start of my day. This is one of the best ways to wake up. Snow everywhere. Are you able to spot the Olympic rings? Picture has been taken next to my place, in Olympic Park.
When I start my daily commute trip, I will cross Olympic Park and enter the canals. From the canals you have a beautiful view over West Ham United. Stadium that was used during the Olympics for athletics and the ceremonies.
From the first part I will enter Victoria Park. From Victoria Park I will continue my journey past the canals. The pool is partly frozen and children are having snow fights in this park as well. However I have the feeling that most of the people are taking a different mode of transport today. The park isn’t that busy and I don’t see that many cyclists today.
People have a lot of stuff on their boats. This morning this gnome was hidden in the snow. It more looked like a caterpillar now according to my girlfriend. I was more thinking that this gnome is wearing an eye-mask against the sun.
Just before reaching the office, around Kings Cross / St. Pancras International Station, there is a book shop on water. This so called book on water is a bookshop on a boat. During summer there are also musicians performing on top of the boat. However today everything is completely covered by snow.
