If you’re currently putting together your 2019 travel plans, you’re probably trying your hardest to whittle down a huge list of destinations you want to visit at least once in your life. Although I wish it were possible to visit a new place every single week, that’s just not the way travelling works. To truly appreciate a new destination, you need to give it the time and attention it deserves. That’s why you need to choose at least one destination and stick to it. My top 2019 destination? It just has to be Cambodia!
You can lend a helping hand
There are so many reasons why people travel to Asia each year, but one of the main reasons tourists flock to Cambodia is because they want to lend a helping hand. Although Cambodia is an up-and-coming destination for travellers, much of the country is still impoverished. Because of this, volunteers are always welcome to teach in schools, volunteer in animal sanctuaries, and to truly make a difference in people’s lives.
You get to experience city life
Cambodia is a country of two halves, and the city life in Cambodia is second to none. Most notably, the capital city of Phnom Penh is a hugely popular destination for those who love bright lights, bustling roads, and a buzz of people from all over the world. While the cities in Cambodia are modern and vibrant, they also show hints to the past. From the architecture to the food, there’s no doubt about the fact that you’re in Asia.
The animals are extraordinary
Asia is known for housing some of the most impressive animals in the world, and Cambodia is no different. This country is covered in jungle and fauna that provides the ultimate hiding place for creatures big and small, and you can spot a variety of animals within the trees. Whether you’re a fan of elephants, sun bears, tigers, gibbons, and other animals, you won’t have to travel too far to see them in the flesh.
Remote islands are waiting to be explored
The other half of Cambodia can be found on the coast and in the water because this country is also made up of beautiful and remote islands that are waiting to be explored. Yes, getting to the likes of Koh Totang, Koh Thmei and Koh Ta Kiev may require a boat, but the crystal clear waters, golden sandy beaches and windswept palm trees make up for it. You can relax on the beach, you can try your hand at watersports, or you can party the night away. The islands are your oyster.
Haggling is a way of life
The Secret Traveller at 1Cover notes that the best way to make the most of your travels is to make a budget and stick to it. While it’s important to do this, you’ll be happy to know that your daily budget doesn’t have to be too high if you’re planning on taking a trip to Cambodia. This country is known for its markets and street stalls, and the prices just can’t be beaten. Couple that with the fact that you can haggle the price down, and you won’t find yourself out of pocket anytime soon.
The food is second to none
If you enjoy comfort food, you’ll love the food in Cambodia. From fresh fruit and vegetables to steaming bowls of noodles and rice, the people of this country knows just how to tickle your taste buds . While you can chow down on curries and salads, you can even experiment and try something new. One particular delicacy is red tree ants with beef, which is both alarming and delicious at the same time!
Cambodia should definitely be on the top of your bucket list for 2019, and I hope these reasons have convinced you. If you’ve been to this country and have more reasons to add, let me know in the comments!
